Coogee Bay Hotel Goes Green

In a bid to see hospitality by-products effectively recycled, the Coogee Bay Hotel is piloting a program with the Beverage Industry Environment Council to develop “Best Practice” Waste Management for ongoing use in hotels and registered clubs around Australia.

As a result of these recent environmental initiatives, the Coogee Bay Hotel, Sydney’s largest hotel outlet, is now recycling 66% of all the packaging materials consumed at the popular Sydney beachside pub. In the first month of the pilot alone, over 9 tonnes of glass was removed from the premise for recycling.

The Coogee Bay Hotel began recycling bottles, cans, cardboard, paper and plastics early this year supplemented with an upgrade of recycling facilities and dedicated training for all hotel staff.

Coogee Bay Hotel is serious about reducing its environmental impacts. The Hotel is using the new Do The Right Thing anti litter campaign under the Don’t Waste Coogee Bay Hotel banner. Do The Right Thing is one of the most successful behaviour change campaigns in Australian history, delivering a 70% reduction in litter in NSW.

“Attaining a 66% recycling rate is a great achievement and sets a standard that we hope other Sydney pubs will be able to match. The management, staff and customers of the Coogee Bay Hotel are really committed, none of this would have been possible without their efforts,” explains Olivia Tyler, National Program Coordinator with the Beverage Industry Environment Council.

In another step towards strengthening the hotel and the community’s commitment to recycling, calico shopping bags are now available in the Hotel’s Liquor Barn in a bid to reduce the use of plastic bags. This initiative follows the recent project by Randwick Council where residents received calico bags for grocery shopping.
